The Windows® Registry
Since 1995 Windows® has had a registry. Look at it as a sort of data base; a large repository of information about every aspect of your computer.
Incidentally the proper way to add and remove software from your Windows PC, is with the Add and Remove tool in Control panel. The registry is very fragile and complex. Any change that you make is carried out dyamically, so make sure that you backup your data before you attempt to make any changes in there and also that you know what you are doing. For the brave or those who understand what they are doing you can edit the registry directly. A free tool that comes with Windows® is Regedit or Regedt32. One could use either tool to fix the registry directly or in other words, edit the registry. But beware Regedt32 is the one recommened to use if you want to fix the registry in Windows® NT4 or Windows® 2000.The registry in Windows® 95 and Windows® XP the tool to use would be Regedit. Regfix tools, reg cleaners are far easier to use for the less brave you could say that is is a quick way to a clearner registry. You can and should make a backup of your registry file.
If you have ever added software to your computer and haven't removed it properly then you may have noticed that it doesn't perform as it used to. For example, perhaps it does not start up properly, runs slowly, or takes a long time to shut down. This could be because the registry has been damaged. The solution? fix your registry, so enter the registry cleaner. These utility programs can repair a damaged registry.
